If an animal has nowhere else to go, the doors are open at the Moose Jaw Humane Society.

There are so many reasons why people make the tough choice to surrender a pet, and we never want to see an animal suffer because people feel they have no options. We see animals in all kinds of conditions, but there is nothing sadder than a pet that is undernourished and ill because the owners can’t afford to feed it or get vet care. If you find yourself in this situation, please call us or come to the Shelter.

For people who just find themselves in a new life situation, like an apartment that doesn’t allow pets or a new baby who takes up all your time, and you need to surrender an animal, we ask that you try some options yourself to find them a new home.

What You Can Do In The Community

  • Ask friends and family if they can take your animals, or if they know someone who can.
  • Hang posters.
  • Ask your Veterinarian if they know anyone that might be interested in taking your pet. Vet's offices often have boards where you can post flyers advertising your pet.
  • Make a poster for us to hang on our bulletin board.
If you have exhausted these tactics for placing your pet you may call the shelter to speak with an adoption counsellor and to discuss surrendering your animal to our shelter.

Please be aware there is a surrender fee of $20 per cat, $50 for dogs under 40 lbs. and $75 for dogs over 40 lbs. It is not free for us to care for your surrendered pet during its stay at our shelter and these fees go towards covering a portion of the cost incurred. If you are unable to pay the surrender fee, please talk to our staff. Unless we have no space, we will do everything we can to help you and your animal.

Want to walk and help the Moose Jaw Humane Society? Download the ResQWalk app. It is an app for smartphones that keeps track of how many km people walk, run or bike. The shelter then receives money from their donor pool. We love it, and we are #2 in North America for km walked! More info.
