  • The Shelter History
Compiled by John and Annetta Wilson

1966 – The first animal shelter opened at 9th Avenue NW and High Street W. The shelter building was previously an old school house.
1970 – The shelter took over the care of animals picked up by the dogcatcher.
1973 – The first Peace Officer in Moose Jaw was Betty Zinn.
1974 – A flood put 2 feet of water into the shelter. Dogs were taken to the Exhibition grounds and cats were taken to various homes.
1980 – The Moose Jaw Humane Society was incorporated as a non-profit corporation.
1983 – The first Pet Therapy session was held at the Providence hospital.
1983 – Capital Building fund established for the purpose of accumulating the necessary funds to acquire a new animal shelter.
1984 – An agreement with the Air Base to house pound animals was signed.
1984 – Sod turning ceremony for the new shelter.
1984 – City council authorized a leasing agreement for land to build a new shelter. 3 locations were offered by the city for consideration. The Stadacona location was selected as it was high, dry and Thatcher Drive was soon to be constructed.
1985 – After years of fundraising and a few bequests, the new shelter was constructed and opened in September. The City contributed about 20% of the cost of construction.
1986 – The first newsletters were produced on a regular basis. The Humane Society logo was approved.
1986 – The grand opening of the new shelter.
1988 –Dedication of a memorial cairn at 280-9th Avenue NW, site of the original shelter.
1990 – A substantial bequest was received from the John Dobson estate.
    1991 – A Shelter vehicle was purchased.
1991 – Additional property adjacent to the shelter was obtained from the City to create a pet cemetery and to build a crematorium.
1995 – Due to the lack of office space and isolation rooms for the cats and puppies, an addition was built on the east side of the existing shelter. Construction costs were funded mainly by a generous bequest and donation of time and material.
1996 – The pet cemetery was landscaped and the crematorium was built.
1999 – An agreement with the City to provide animal rescue services was signed.
